The Cure Starts Now Fundraising Night: Honoring Piper

Join us for an evening of shopping, snacks, and fundraising for The Cure Starts Now in honor of Piper Waneka.

Described as a “glitter explosion,” Piper made every day an occasion for hot-pink hair and an unbreakable smile. She was intelligent, funny, creative, brave beyond her years, and bursting with spirit. She dreamed of one day becoming a space doctor and a mother.

But Piper’s world changed in an instant on June 12, 2017. At the age of just 3 1⁄2, she was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an inoperable tumor in her brainstem. DIPG occurs primarily in young children and there is currently no known cause, nor cure. DIPG is considered terminal upon diagnosis. Median survival is just 9 months. Children are offered the same standard of care they received 60 years ago, focused solely on comfort and quality of life. Make memories they say.

Piper embodied strength while enduring debilitating challenges for 16 months, before passing away on October 19, 2018, just two months shy of her 5th birthday. But her inspiration is far from over. Help us continue Piper’s legacy by supporting The Cure Starts Now, a groundbreaking nonprofit that funds innovative research and trials that help other children fighting DIPG. All grants fund specific research while making researchers accountable to results and innovation.

Each month, Balefire Goods works with a local non-profit and donates a portion of sales to important causes impacting our community. Throughout the month of March and on this special evening, 5% of sales will go to support The Cure Starts Now to provide funding to support research into DIPG*. Shop for artisan jewelry and other unique goods at Balefire Goods storefront in historic Olde Town Arvada and help support this important research.
